What is a Dental Emergency?
Our team at SKH Dentistry understands that emergencies can happen at any time. That's why we are here to help.
If you aren't sure if you are experiencing a dental emergency, check our list below. These are common dental emergencies that our dentists should treat right away. Call our dental clinic so we can schedule an appointment as soon as possible.
If you require immediate care, go to your nearest emergency room.

Swelling, Pain or Discomfort
If you're experiencing moderate to severe swelling, pain, or discomfort in your mouth or jaw area, call us as soon as possible.
In the meantime, follow these tips to alleviate pain:
- Using a cold compress, apply pressure on your cheek in the area where you feel pain.
- Take an over-the-counter pain medication.
- If the pain is coming from inside your mouth, use salt water to flush the area.
Please note that if the swelling impacts your ability to breathe, you should seek emergency medical care at a hospital as soon as possible.
-
Lost Crowns
While crowns are made to last, they can fall off prematurely. If that happens, keep calm and call our office right away to book an appointment.
In a perfect world, you'd receive dental care the day your crown falls out. However, we know that this isn't always possible, so if your uncovered tooth hurts you can pick up some temporary dental cement or wax at the pharmacy to cover the spot in the meantime. This will help protect your tooth until your appointment.
If you can find your crown, rinse it with warm water and place it in a container to bring to your appointment. Our dentists may be able to reattach your crown, saving you from having to pay to have a new one made.
-
Lost Fillings
If a filling falls out of your tooth, call us to make an appointment as soon as possible. Your tooth is susceptible to additional decay while the hole is exposed, so it's important to get your filling fixed in a timely manner.
Keep the area clean and avoid chewing on the affected side until you get the filling replaced.
-
Chipped or Broken Teeth
If you chip or break a tooth, try to find the missing piece. If you can find it, put it in a container to bring to your appointment with you. It is possible that your dentist can reattach it.
Whether you have the broken piece or not, call our office to have the broken tooth repaired. We offer a variety of restorative options to make your smile whole again.
-
Knocked-Out Teeth
If you've had a tooth knocked out, there are several steps that need to be taken immediately to try to save it. First and foremost, call our office. If we can, we will see you right away. The sooner you can be treated once a tooth has been knocked out, the more likely it is that your dentist will be able to save it.
If you can find your knocked-out tooth, pick it up by the top (not the roots) and rinse it with warm water. Then, try to reinsert it into its socket. Once you have it in, gently bite down to hold it in place.
If you have the tooth but cannot get it back into its socket, place it in a container of milk and bring it to your dental appointment. If you are in pain, apply pressure and a cold compress to your cheek where the tooth was lost.
if your tooth cannot be saved, we offer restorative options such as bridges and implants that can be used to replace your missing tooth.
